Sleep teaching failed because they were attempting to teach children rational fact, something that was impossible and overwhelming. It was concluded that you cannot learn a science until you understand it. When they changed tactics some years later, moral education became the preferred lesson. This was believed to be appropriate because it was not rational thought.
