Mummy cases were decorated by painting on wood, of which there were two ways to do so: encaustic (wax) painting and egg-based tempera. The wax paintings have vivid colors and contrast to them and is done with large brushstrokes making them look impressionistic. Tempera painting is more refined but uses chalkier colors.
